      Reviewer’s commentary:
This document does not focus specifically on pain management. It is a brochure aimed at helping parents psychologically prepare themselves and their children for surgery. Much of the discussion and related advice is reasonable and reflects data from empirical studies of coping with surgical procedures or clinical experience. Thus, it fills a void in providing some basic information and ideas for parents who are facing a potentially trying situation. Some of the information given in the introduction is a bit broad and does not truly distinguish the roles of the various professionals. In addition, some of the material on children's and adolescents' reactions to surgery could more closely parallel aspects of cognitive development during those periods. Otherwise, it appears that this pamphlet would serve the purpose of a simple, straightforward source of information for parents
